Barcelona – the beach and sunshine

Barcelona was one of the most relaxing trips I have yet taken. We slept in on Friday taking a later flight out of Weeze and arrived in Griona two hours later. From there we took an hour bus ride into the city of Barcelona getting there late afternoon.

That first night we walked down to the beach and just sat enjoying the waves and refreshing sea breeze. The water was really cold and the wind just a little on the chilly side, but we brought extra sheets from the castle and used them as blankets.

Our apartment in Barcelona was absolutely beautiful! It had two bedrooms in addition to the pull out couch that sat in the living room/dining room/kitchen.

The next day was our bike tour, after a delicious home cooked breakfast of scrambled eggs, avocado, and toast we set out for the meeting point and joined a group of at least 20 other bikers. With the bike tour, we were able to see all of Barcelona’s major attractions and “travel as a local.” In Barcelona they have bikes that residents can use for 30 mins at a time and then return to points all over the city. It is a really cool transportation system – and environmentally friendly. ☺

We also walked around all of these outdoor markets which were a tad expensive but free to look at.

That night we enjoyed a typical Spanish meal on La Rambla of tapas, paella, and sangria.

Our last day was all about the beach, we set up a home base right across from the waves and spread out all the snacks and food we had bought for the apartment and then played cards, ate, and enjoyed the sunshine.

We also took turns watching the stuff so others could walk around on their own or go eat at one of the beachside restaurants that doted the boardwalk. I walked around a little on my own just to take pictures and enjoy the scenery and realized how much there is to take in. It is hard to see it and experience it all when walking in a big group that speaks English and talks about plans for later and what to spend/not to spend money on. I loved walking alone because all of that disappeared. I was able to concentrate on the sights I was looking at and hear the voices and smell the smells – it was an amazing experience.
